NURBS modeling

NURBS modeling has paved its way to becoming an ideal choice for carrying out computer-aided modeling. NURBS, Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines, are mathematical representations of 3D geometry that can accurately describe any shape from a simple 2D line, circle, arc, or curve to the most complex 3D organic free-form surface or solid.NURBS calculates the model’s surface by using complex geometry and works better for models that need more precision. NURBS surfaces are always smooth and have no sharp corners, they are widely used in an organic simulation for generating models of animals, people, cars, games, visualizations, industry modeling, animations, and other objects.

Scan to Nurbs Modelling

To create the NURBS surface model from a 3D scan of an object, there are simple and automated workflows created by 3D Scan data processing software. Complex 3D scan meshes or sculpted meshes(.stl,.ply)with fine detail are converted into the NURBS-based CAD format. A reverse engineering software constructs a surface patch network over the entire 3D mesh data set. The main edges of the patchwork consist of the previously defined 3D contours and additional patches are included to allow for the surface to “wrap” over the mesh for the most accurate geometry representation. This software identifies areas of poor geometry within the patchwork. This repair process can locate and resolve intersecting paths, poor patch angles, high degree corners, and high deviation patches to ensure the highest quality and accuracy of NURBS surface is created. The resulting STEP, IGES, and Parasolid files can be imported by all major CAD systems such as Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor, Solidedge, Creo, and CATIA.
